Software Development Internships
Rocketspark is seeking two students for a paid summer internship
This a great opportunity to provide the foundations for your career. The role is funded under the Callaghan Student Experience Grant programme with 400 hours paid over a 3 month period.
For this internship you’ll join the Rocketspark development team to work on Rocketspark's proprietary website builder platform in an agile/project based manner, collaborating with our development and design teams on a really exciting roadmap of new features that are deployed globally. Check out our latest Flint AI writing tools as an example of the type of project you could be a part of.
Gain beneficial experience for the internship
Our core platform is running on Linux based infrastructure, prior experience with PHP/MySQL or HTML/CSS and Javascript/Typescript would be beneficial. You will be working within a local Docker environment, pushing your work to GitHub, and reviewing PRs before running our pipeline testing suites and deploying to production.
While we can’t provide guarantees about future career prospects we have a great track record of hiring interns into full time and part time roles and you’ll be able to connect with them during the interview process to get the low down on life at Rocketspark.
Ideal skills and talents we’re looking for:
Self motivated to create best in class software
You have an A or better grade average
Either join our backend stream where experience in PHP/MySQL or similar backend technologies would be valuable, or our frontend stream where experience in Javascript/Typescript/CSS/HTML or frameworks like Vue/React would be valuable.
You will have created your own software applications for fun, or maybe to create the next big thing...
Good written and oral communication, being able to reason well and explain why things are built a certain way.
A passion for the latest web technologies and code quality. There's an opportunity to influence the direction and openly share ideas within our team. You understand good coding patterns and write code that is testable. Using Cursor or similar AI coding agents would also be useful.
A natural feel and intuition for customers' problems, user experience and how best to solve them with software.
An excitement for generative AI and incorporating this into software products.

What you’ll gain from this internship:
This is a meaningful opportunity to work on a software platform that will give you true experience differentiation in a large and crowded job market. You get to see under the hood of how the software is structured and built. You'll also gain real world insights into what helps small business owners and designers to be more successful online.
The internship is for a 400 hour (10 week) period as funded by Callaghan innovation and while an extension is not guaranteed we have a good track record of keeping interns on until uni starts again
Through this project you’ll gain experience in:
Collaborating with a team of talented developers, designers and marketers
Harnessing deep customer insight to develop a viable solution
Researching a solution and developing a plan for execution
Backend and frontend Software development experience
This is a paid position for the project which has been approved by Callaghan Innovation for a Student Experience Grant
Timings:

Join us at our Rocketspark office in Cambridge, 20 minutes drive from The University of Waikato.
Requirements:
The role is funded under the Callaghan Innovation Experience grant. You must meet the Student eligibility requirements.
Studying, or has recently completed, an undergraduate or postgraduate degree or qualification at NZQA level 6-10. If the study has been completed, the closing date of their final semester should be less than 12 months ago.
Studying, or has studied, science, technology, engineering, design or business at a New Zealand tertiary education institute.
Legally permitted to work in New Zealand.
Has not been previously employed at the business, unless part-time or temporary.
Has not undertaken more than two R&D Experience Grant internships with the same business.
