RENEE FROM QUIRK DESIGN STUDIO INTERVIEW

What sort of work do you typically enjoy doing the most?

I started with branding design, working with small businesses and just helping them really start off their business and brand. And that naturally flowed into website design as they grew and they needed a digital presence. So I think from there website design has come to be my favorite part of the job.

What was the biggest challenge that your client was facing when they came to you and how did you know where to start?

So this was a cool project because I started with their branding before we started with the website. It was mainly about just getting that presence and that digital awareness when we jumped into the website. Since they were fresh and brand new, they didn't have any images or tone of voice. So, diving into that, finding a lot of the imagery on the website was stock imagery. So yeah, that was a challenge making sure it aligned with the brand.

In terms of knowing where to start with the website, what did that look like? Was that a briefing process?

This was one of the first projects where I was able to bring on a SEO specialist and copywriter. That was amazing, collaborating with them. It really helped us map out the user journey and the wireframe. Yeah. So that's where we started with the copywriting and everything flowed on from there.

What was your initial creative vision for this project and how did it evolve as you worked with the client or did it evolve?

Yeah, so tailored events, we really wanted a bold and bright brand. So that was fun bringing in a bunch of bright colors, yeah, happy and bright imagery. And those fun and funky shapes were a part of building out that brand. And translating that into the website, we wanted it to be bold and bright, but still have that balance of usability, so not overpowering. Finding that balance between bold and usable.

Can you share any breakthrough moments of where the design really came together or was it more straightforward because you had established the brand first?

Yeah. Alongside establishing the brand and then working with the copywriter, having a clear wireframe and vision for it, the whole process was smoother and easier than previous projects. So no major breakthrough moments, it was a smooth process.

What aspects of the design are you most proud of and why?

Yeah, I'm happy with how sourcing all those images took quite a long time to really capture the essence of the brand. So I'm happy how they all came together against the strong colors, the typography, and the custom shapes. Something that was fun is there's a few little graphic drawing icons throughout the website. So yeah, that was a fun different part which I don't often get to bring into website design if the brand's serious, but since this was such a fun and playful brand, bringing those little custom drawings in was fun.

How has this website made a difference for your client's business?

Yeah. So yeah, we've had great feedback both from the client and their customers. Giving them a digital presence, building brand awareness and trust, just looking overall more professional and having a presence online has really helped. And giving the customers a clear way to see all the services they offer has been super helpful. Tailored Events started off just as tent higher, but they've gone into weddings and corporate events and festivals. So yeah, it's a nice, clear and easy way for the customers to see all the offerings and really target specific audiences as well.

What was it like to see the client react to the finished product? Was it a final presentation?

Yeah. I mean, I was lucky with this one, since I had creative control from the start, they just let me have total creative freedom with this site. And yeah, they were happy with what I presented them and there were no changes, which is not very often you get that on a site. So yeah, that was awesome.

In your eyes, what makes a great client and how do you bring out the best in a collaboration?

I think a great client is maybe someone who's willing to do their homework with you. I think it's a collaborative thing building a website because they are living in their brand and their business every day. So yeah, if they're willing to collaborate and help you really get into the nitty gritty of what their business is and how they want to be represented, is what makes a great client.

What would you say that you learned during this project?

Since it was the first time with a copywriter, I think I learned that bringing on other experts in different fields is a great way to make the overall process seamless and strong. So I was strong with the visuals and the graphic elements, but bringing in someone who's an expert in SEO, and copywriting, really made the rest of the brand, and the website come to life together.

What would you say the benefit of using a copywriter is over using AI to write content?

Yeah, I think since it's a fun and bold brand, really capturing the essence, having a conversational, but professional tone is where the copywriter really nails that. ChatGPT can sometimes be quite techy, almost in their responses. And sometimes you can tell when you're reading something that doesn't have that personal touch to it.

If you had to describe this website in three words, what would they be and why?

I would say maybe bold, playful and fun. Those are very similar words, but I think it really plays into what the brand's trying to represent.

What did it mean to you when you won a Gold Rocketspark Design award, and has it changed anything for you?

Yeah, it was such a nice surprise. And yeah, it's really special to be recognized for something you're proud of. So yeah, putting so much work into this, it's awesome to be recognized by others, thinking that it's a cool project. So yeah, it's really awesome. And yeah, it gives you confidence leading into other projects, or even showing your clients that other people think you're a great designer.
