How best to display a Google map on your website

Rocketspark makes it really easy to add a map to your website.  Just add a map block and enter the address you want the pin to be centered on.  No need to worry about Google Maps embed codes.

What is the best way to display or layout a map on your website?

A map on your site needs to be large enough to give some context to the pin’s location and this will vary depending on how urban the map location is.  If it’s a metropolitan area with lots of small streets, a smaller map will still give you context to understand visually quickly where the pin is located relative to surrounding streets or landmarks.  Compare that with a long rural road with no other turns or landmarks near the pin - you’ll need to make the map larger to give more context.

What is the ideal map size on a Rocketspark website?

Between a ⅓ column width and a ⅔ column width.  Smaller than that is usually too small and larger than that will take up most of the screen.  A really large map might be useful in some situations but generally speaking isn’t required.

Give your map a heading:

For you it might be obvious that your map is showing where you’re located but it’s still helpful to the visitor to have a heading which gives some context.  For example, “How to find us”.

Which page should I put the map on?

This depends on the kind of business you are and how important your location is to your visitors.

If you’re a retail shop or restaurant, visitors might be regularly checking your website to find where you are, so having a map on your home page might be useful to them.  This might be especially helpful to them if a lot of your traffic is on a mobile device.

If you’re a service business that has clients come to your premises from time to time, the contact page would be the expected place to find a map of your location.  However, it’s important the text on your home page makes it clear where you’re located if proximity is important.

If you produce a product, your location might still be of interest to visitors (even if they don’t visit that premises).  For example, if you’re a Vineyard the land and area is a significant part of your brand story so a map on your about us page would be appropriate.

Having a map on your website is important if your visitors need to find you or if it’s relevant to your brand story as a company.  However, make sure you’re also listed on Google Maps as this can have a significant affect on your normal Google search ranking.
