Coffee and community

It started with the need for a coffee and a place to work. It turned into a partnership that benefits the whole community.

One of our newest design partners, The Renew Room, is made up of three amazing women, Claire Rawnsley, Beka Sutherland and Jayde McLean.

Beka and Claire co-own the business, Beka is a graphic designer and Claire is a marketing wizz. They started the venture at the beginning of August, 2020.

We recently caught up with Claire to see how the team was getting on since joining and to chat about them being a finalist in our Launch 2021 Community Good Award category for their work with community organisation Ōtara Health.

“It’s all going really well so far, in January we hired Jayde, she’s our first employee. Jayde has taken on the role of agency operations manager,” Claire said.

Claire and Jayde both live in Auckland, while Beka is based in Queenstown.

“Just recently we’ve been looking at different co-working spaces and we’d planned to do a blog post about different cafes, basically saying which ones were good to work at and we went to a new cafe in Ōtara called Alexander Cafe. We worked there once and we’ve never left,” she laughed.

Claire and Jayde now work from Alexander Cafe often and they’ve created a great relationship with the owners, one of whom turned out to work in the active families team at Ōtara Health.

Since 1998 Ōtara Health has been at the heart of Ōtara providing a wide range of health, education, social and community services.

“The active families programme has been running for over a decade, but their funding had run out so they needed to get insights from the community to put forward a business case for more funding in order to continue to help the community grow.

“They wanted to create a survey with a landing page to get people interested and to try and entice people to do the survey,” Claire said.

So, The Renew Room set about to create a landing page on Rocketspark where all the links go externally to Survey Monkey where people could complete the survey.

“The community is really important to us at The Renew Room, and we were able to offer extremely discounted rates to work with Ōtara Health to gain insights on our whānau here in South Auckland.

“The active families team is really trying to make a difference, and that struck a chord with me because I grew up in South Auckland and I want people to have the choice of a healthier lifestyle, regardless of what background they have,” Claire said.

She said the aim of the landing page created was to encourage people to fill in the survey and give the active families at Ōtara Health insights to what was holding people back from living healthier lives.

“They will use those insights to create programmes that will better serve the community with the overall aim to improve the health and wellbeing of all families in South Auckland,” Claire said.
