Starting out on your own can be a daunting task.
Back in 2006 when I started as a freelance graphic designer I faced a range of challenges — like finding clients, knowing what to charge, how to quote, preparing tax returns, paying thousands for CD-based design software, working with developers to code websites — and as a result lived with my parents to help pay the bills.
A few years later, along with a few buddies of mine and my brother Grant we started out on a new business journey with a couple bucks and a dream. Well the bucks and the dream disappeared pretty quickly as the reality of what we were trying to achieve set in. We struggled through trying to source leads, and we were our own technical support.

In the last ten years, the learnings have piled in — how to delight clients, manage client expectations and respond to difficult clients. We know how to write terms and conditions for quotes that’ll protect the designer from overruns and millions of rounds of revisions the client won't pay for. We’ve learnt about tackling the slow payers, the no payers, and almost every other tough client experience you could imagine — We’ve learned these lessons so you don’t have to.
After 5 years of designing websites for clients on our own website platform, word got out and other designers started asking us if they could use our web design tools to design websites for their clients. 5 years ago we launched the Rocketspark Web Design Studio to make sure that no one else had to struggle through what we did. We’ve built up 1000’s of advice articles from starting out, to quoting, to dealing with tech problems and challenging clients. Ten years on from starting the business, we no longer design any websites in-house. We refer all web design leads to our Design Partners.
